COMPARISON | RPO, EMBEDDED OR MSP?

MATCH THE HIRING MODEL TO THE HIRING CHALLENGES

The talent solutions industry has a habit of leading with acronyms. But buyers do not have acronym problems; they have unique hiring challenges. Start with yours, and the right model follows.

  • Embedded Talent (Recruiter-as-a-Service): you need recruiting capacity inside your team, quickly, that you can turn up and down.

  • Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO): you need your permanent hiring run end to end, at volume, consistently, for a cost you can forecast.

  • Managed Service Provider (MSP): you need your contractor and contingent workforce brought under control: suppliers, rates, onboarding, IR35, spend.

  • Total Talent: you need both permanent and contingent under one programme, one data set, one governance model.

  • Talent Advisory: you need to fix a specific part of hiring (screening, assessment, employer brand, workforce planning) without outsourcing the function.

Start with the problem

Describe your hiring situation in a sentence, and the right model usually follows.

Which talent solution fits which hiring problem:

If your problem is... You probably need Why
"Our hiring plan has outgrown the team, but we can't justify permanent recruiters" Embedded Talent (RaaS) Adds capacity in days, under your brand, in your systems, and flexes back down when the spike passes
"We're hiring 80+ roles a year and the agency bill is unpredictable" Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) Replaces per-placement fees with a forecastable model and one consistent process
"Every hire needs FCA screening and an audit trail, and we have five agencies doing it five ways" Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO)Or Total Talent if contractors are involved One process, one standard, one record
"We've got 100+ contractors through a dozen agencies and nobody can tell me total spend" Managed Service Provider (MSP) Consolidates supply, rates, onboarding and invoicing into one programme with one view
"IR35 decisions are being made by hiring managers and I'm not confident they're right" Managed Service Provider (MSP) Centralises status determinations, documents them, keeps them under review
"We have permanent and contractor hiring and they don't talk to each other" Total Talent One partner, one governance model, one data set across both
"We're opening a new operation and need 60 people by a fixed date, then normal service" Project RPOOr Embedded Talent if you'd rather keep the process in-house A fixed-time campaign run for you to a target and a deadline, without a long-term contract
"Our process is fine, but interviews are inconsistent and offers keep getting rejected" Talent Advisory & Consuktancy Fix the specific stage (interview training, assessment, offer process) without outsourcing the function
"We just need to hire a Chief Actuary" A specialist agency Senior, niche, one-off searches suit our sister brand Gerrard White Consulting, not an outsourcing model

How the models combine

Most businesses do not need one model. They need a sequence or a blend:

  • Start with Embedded Talent, grow into RPO. A common path: embedded recruiters solve the immediate capacity problem, prove the model, and the relationship becomes a full RPO once volume and trust are there.

  • RPO plus MSP equals Total Talent. Once both sides are running, bringing them under one governance model removes the blind spot between permanent and contingent spend.

  • Advisory alongside anything. Interview training, psychometric frameworks, FCA maintenance checks and IR35 audits sit alongside any of the above, or on their own.

Take one, take several, or start with one and grow into the others.

Illustrative scenarios*

  • Embedded Talent: an insurtech post-funding needs 40 hires in two quarters, then a quieter period. Three embedded recruiters for the growth phase, scaling to one afterwards, leaving a documented process and talent pool behind.

  • MSP: a mid-sized insurer with 180 contractors through nine agencies, rates varying 20% for the same role, and no central IR35 record. One programme consolidates supply, benchmarks rates, centralises determinations and gives finance a single monthly view of spend.

  • Total Talent: a life and pensions provider running RPO for permanent hiring and a separate MSP for change contractors discovers that the same roles are being filled both ways at different costs. One programme, one data set, and the duplication disappears.

Still not sure?

That is normal, and the answer is often a blend. Three ways to get to it:

  1. Two minutes: the Talent Solution Finder points you to the right model for you

  2. Thirty seconds: the Recruitment Capacity Check tells you whether your team can deliver your hiring plan

  3. A conversation:book a discovery call will help you understand, honestly, which model fits, and if part of the answer is "you don't need us for that", we will say so
