Choosing a recruitment MSP: the questions you're actually asking, answered straight

Nobody browses MSP websites for fun. If you're reading this, something specific is wrong: contractor spend nobody can explain, an IR35 process held together with goodwill, or a supplier list that grew one emergency at a time. So let's skip the brochure language and answer the questions contingent workforce leads actually ask, including the ones providers prefer to dodge.

One credential and one disclaimer up front. We're Vermelo, we run MSP programmes, and we won Best RPO Businessat the Global Recruiter Awards 2025. Which means everything below deserves your scepticism, and we've written it to survive that scepticism.

Managed Service Provider (MSP) - for contractor hiring

"Remind me what a recruitment MSP actually does?"

It runs your contractor and contingent workforce as one accountable model: supplier relationships, rate control, onboarding, IR35 status process, screening and reporting. Not IT support, despite the shared acronym. You keep the contractors and the decisions; the MSP runs the machinery around them.

"Do I actually need one?"

Maybe not, and any provider who won't entertain that answer is selling, not advising. The honest threshold: an MSP earns its keep when contractor management has become a job nobody officially owns, typically once contractors span multiple suppliers or teams and nobody holds the full picture of spend, compliance and risk. A handful of contractors through one trusted agency doesn't need any of us yet. Come back when it stops being a handful.

"Master vendor or neutral vendor, and does it matter?"

It matters, and it's a fast way to test a provider's candour. A master vendor MSP fills most roles itself, using a supplier panel for the rest: concentrated accountability, but check the incentives on hard-to-fill roles. A neutral vendor supplies no candidates itself and manages your agencies impartially: maximum supplier competition, one step removed from delivery. Neither is universally right. Ask any provider which they run and why, and if the answer is a fudge, so is the programme.

"Who are the big players?"

At true enterprise scale, thousands of contractors across countries, the global houses own the territory: Hays Talent Solutions, Randstad Enterprise, Allegis Global Solutions, Pontoon and Guidant Global all run vast UK-connected programmes with VMS technology and procurement-grade infrastructure. Rullion is also worth knowing for large UK technical workforces under master or neutral vendor models.

The catch is in the word enterprise. A programme architected for 5,000 contractors rarely flexes gracefully around 150, and mid-sized clients in enterprise portfolios learn what "tier two account management" means.

"And the UK specialists?"

Three names, three specialisms. Lorien for technology: independently recognised among the UK's largest IT staffing firms, with tech supply chains to match. Morson for engineering and industry: they pioneered the UK managed service model in 1996 and remain the reference point for aerospace, defence, rail and energy. Sanderson for range: thirty-plus years running master vendor, neutral vendor and blended programmes across sectors, including public sector frameworks. If your contractor base looks like one of those three descriptions, start with that name.

The Curve Group deserves a mention for something narrower: focused IR35 determination support and consolidated contractor onboarding, useful when compliance administration is the acute pain rather than the whole programme.

"Where does Vermelo fit, then?"

In the gap the paragraphs above just described. Our MSP was forged inside regulated businesses: insurers, insurtechs and financial services firms, where an inconsistent IR35 determination or an incomplete screening file is a regulatory problem, not an admin one. FCA screening, right to work and audit-ready status records are the core of the model, not bolt-ons, and we run programmes for any sector at the size the enterprise tier treats as a rounding error. MSP is also one of five solutions we operate, so contingent and permanent hiring can converge under one partner when you're ready.

Where we're not the answer: thousands of contractors across heavy engineering sites. That's Morson or Lorien territory, and we'd say so in the first meeting.

"Everyone promises compliance. How do I tell who means it?"

Three tests. First, the liability conversation: IR35 status determinations remain your legal obligation as the end client, and a good MSP makes that process defensible with consistent assessments, documented reasoning and audit-ready records. Anyone implying they take the legal risk away entirely is confused or hoping you are. (Get your own legal advice on the contractual chain regardless; we always say that, because it's true.) Second, ask to see a live compliance dashboard, not a slide of one. Third, ask what happened the last time a determination was challenged. The provider with a real answer has a real process.

"Fine. What's the next step?"

One call, thirty minutes, three straight answers: whether you need an MSP yet, which vendor model fits your supply chain, and whether we're the right provider or one of the names above is. If the honest answer is "not yet, tidy your supplier terms and call us next year", that's what you'll hear. The candour you've just read doesn't switch off when the call starts; it's the product.
